Leicester Startups “Startup Weekend”
Ever had a potentially-scalable business idea or wanted to apply your existing skills to something innovative all within a weekend?
Andrew Constable, from Visualise Solutions, ran the Leicester startups event over the 3rd – 5th December weekend to deliver the Startup weekend. The event was held across the three university campuses with over 20 entrepreneurs who focused on a wide range of business ideas. The weekend is focused on entrepreneurs at the early stages of a business idea, and they want to understand this in more detail and start validating the problem space in more detail.
The weekend’s primary purpose is to share their business ideas with a receptive audience of fellow entrepreneurs and seasoned advisors. The entrepreneurs learn how to validate their ideas using various Lean startup methods.
We took the teams through a whistle-stop tour of activities that would typically take three months, but this gave each group of entrepreneurs the space to understand the basics of their ideas to take forward to future iterations of the concept.
We covered topics such as business model design, using the Lean canvas as the central point. This allowed the teams to get out of the solution space and focus on the broader holistic view of their business idea. From the business model work, they surfaced their assumptions around the business idea and then mapped these based on the level of evidence and how important it is to the business idea. These assumptions formed the basis of the team’s first experiments that fueled the understanding and took forward to the solution design and offer delivery stages.
Once the main activities were completed, the focus was on pitching the idea back, and a winner was chosen.
The participants enjoyed the experience, quote from Joe Hopkinson
I attended the Leicester Startups, Startup Weekend last week, led by Andrew. I found the course very helpful, Andrew has given me great insight into what I need to do in order to develop my business further and validate my ideas. I’d highly recommend his coaching!

Andrew shared some great ideas and concepts over the course of the startup weekend. Knowledge that was invaluable to those looking to start their own business. He taught methods that will enable you to look at your ideas with different lenses and other viewpoints which is a key skill to develop. I would definitely recommend following his material or attending his courses.
Visualise Solutions looks forward to running future events with Leicester Startups. Leicester Startups was founded in 2013 by local entrepreneur Ben Ravilious to help existing, and aspiring startup entrepreneurs find advice, mentorship and co-founders, not to mention the occasional shoulder to cry on!
They do this by running and promoting engaging networking events, seminars, mentoring sessions and hackathons to bring the community closer together. They also encourage more flexible workspaces to help entrepreneurs meet and collaborate.
